Review Dune 2021
If you are a fan of sci-fi you need to watch the new Dune. The first installment came out in 2021 and is a great movie with the second installment due to release in November of 2023.
This version fixes the pacing of the original and does a better job of showing what is happening instead of narrating the story for the viewer.
I give it a 9/10
The original Dune (1984) is near cinematic perfection, the only complaint I have is that there was too much telling and not showing of the important plot points. Many of the important plot information came either from the narration or from internal dialogue. This is the way the books are written but it doesn't work as well for film, it doesn't hurt the film enough for me to say it makes it bad but it breaks me out of the investment I have in the characters.
This version corrected that by spending time showing us what was happening and either building in the explanation in dialogue or letting the viewer infer what was going on. It allows the viewer to get more involved in what is happening on the screen. You find yourself caring for the characters and getting involved in the action.
As this was designed to be part 1 there was a lot of set-up of characters, places, politics, and philosophy. Dune is a complex story that spans across worlds and integrates complex social and political concepts. This movie does a fantastic job of getting everything set-up for the later installments in the series.
The pacing is near perfection, the CGI is not over the top, and the acting is beautiful.
